Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that uses implants to enlarge and shape the breasts.

The Procedure

The incision is made in one of three locations: underneath the breast, around the lower edge of the areola, or within the armpit. Once made, a pocket is made either behind the breast tissue of beneath the pectoral muscle. In my practice I prefer placing the implants behind the muscles, however in some cases this is not possible.

The Recovery

The two to three days after surgery are miserable, however you should be up and about. The pain is similar to engorgement pain during pregnancy, but many have not experienced that yet. Most of the discomfort will be controlled by medication. You may shower two days after surgery. By the fifth day everyone feels better. After a week you will be able to drive a car. Stitches are removed at one week. No aerobic activity for two weeks and no heavy lifting for one month. You may resume regular activity after one month.

Initially your implants will look very high, by one month they will be more natural looking however they may still be high. It may take up to 5 months before they look good.
