You are a candidate for eyelid surgery if you have extra skin on either your upper and lower eyelids, and/or excess fat. Excess fat is noted when the eyes are puffy throughout the whole day. Often times hereditary determine when eyelid surgery is performed. Eyelid surgery will make one look less tired, and will allow easier application of make up to the upper lids.

The Procedure

There are fat pads in both the upper and the lower eyelids. An incision is made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid and the fat is teased out. Any excess skin is removed and the incision is sutured shut. For the lower eyelid, if there is no excess skin to be removed, the incision is placed on the inside of the eyelid. If there is skin to be removed the incision is place just below the eyelashes of the lower lids. A skin/muscle flap is developed, some of the fat is removed and the incision is closed. Depending on the bone structure, the fat may be grafted to other parts of the eye. Skin removal of the lower eyelid is done very conservatively. This is to avoid pulling the lower lid to far down giving the "round/surprised" look. With both of the procedures other surgeries may be performed to correct other less common abnormalities of the eyelid.

The Recovery

Recovery for the upper lid is rather quick. The sutures are removed 3-4 days after the procedure. There is minimal swelling, and minimal bruising.

Recovery for the lower eyelids is a bit different. All the sutures are dissolvable. There may be more bruising and there will be swelling. Because of the nature of the lower eyelid, the lower lids stay swollen for a much longer time. Seventy percent of the swelling is gone by one month; however it may take up to 6 months for all the swelling to be gone.
