This procedure is used to remove excess fat for better contour. It is not for weight loss. If you are at a comfortable weight and there is more fat in one region which is disproportionate to the rest of the body, this is where liposuction helps. It is also used on men for fat accumulation in the breast area (gynecomastia). This may be hereditary but is becoming more common due to new medications.

Procedure

I like to place everyone under general anesthesia, unless the area is very small. At the moment general anesthesia is very safe, and when a large surface is involved. Small 2-3mm incisions are made through which a tumescent solution is infused. This solution is a dilute amount of local anesthesia, with some epinephrine to reduce blood loss. Through these incisions the cannulas are used to remove the fat. Currently I prefer using Vaser liposuction. This is a form of ultrasonic liposuction that melts the fat before removal. I have been able to remove more fat and have had no issues with lumpiness or ridges. This also helps with skin shrinkage. All incisions are sutured closed, and you are placed in a compression garment.

Recovery

The length of recovery depends on the amount of fat removed and the number of areas which are involved. Generally, everyone is walking the day of surgery. If you are having just the abdomen and flanks done, you will be driving the next day. If you add thighs sitting may be uncomfortable. Basically, more areas that are suctioned, the more pain and soreness you will have. With all cases you will be wearing a compression garment. It cannot be removed for 48 hours. After 48 hours, the garment can be removed only to shower and then replaced. The garment is worn for three-four weeks.

Immediately you will see results, however all the swelling is not gone for 6-8 months? In anyone under the age of 35, when you remove the fat the skin will shrink. If you are older the skin will also shrink but not as quickly. It may take up to a year the older you are the less the skin wants to shrink. This is why liposelection has become very popular. It has improved skin shrinkage in every age group.

During recovery, I will weigh you 3 week after surgery. From then on I advise everyone to watch the scale and not gain any weight. Most individuals depend on how there clothes fit to determine whether there is a weight gain. After liposuction, you have removed your fat thermostat. You will gain weight if you eat a lot however the weight will be evenly distributed throughout your body. It will be 10-15 lbs before you realize you've gained that much. The place where you used to gain that 1 or 2 lbs quickly is now gone so you have to be careful.

The final result for liposuction will not be seen until 8-12 months after surgery.
