If you struggle with a double-chin, you may have heard that FDA-approved Kybella injections can be an excellent solution for eliminating stubborn submental
fat. Kybella uses a naturally occurring acid compound to target and destroy fat cells; these remnants are then removed via the body’s metabolic processes. Sounds great, right?

However, Kybella does not always serve as an efficient, cost-effective solution for removing fat beneath your chin. There are several things to take into consideration when deciding which fat removal method is right for you. Let’s take a look at a few reasons why chin liposuction may be a better option for getting rid of your double-chin.

Number of treatments needed:

Kybella is often touted as a “one-and-done” injection treatment; however, most patients with chin fat require at least three injections, spaced one month apart, to see significant results. Kybella is not a solution for eliminating large volumes of fat beneath the chin as is the case with substantial double-chins. For these cases, liposuction is the only effective treatment option.

For those with a moderate volume of submental chin fat, liposuction under local anesthesia is truly a one-time procedure, making it an excellent option for patients who want to see immediate improvement. Like traditional liposuction, Dr. Nitta uses a Vaser cannula – with minimal incisions – to melt away and then remove chin and neck fat.

Results:

Kybella results are typically visible within one month of your last treatment; however, you may need to undergo additional injections to reach your desired outcome.

Following a liposuction procedure, you can expect to see some improvement right away, with final results appearing within 1-4 months, after all swelling is gone. However, it is worth noting that patients with a larger volume of submental fat under their chin and around their neck may require anesthesia or an additional procedure to tighten excess skin. While this adds an additional cost, it will produce desired results. Again, for cases like this, Kybella injections are not a viable treatment plan.

Regardless of which fat removal method you choose, a neck lift may be necessary to tighten loose skin. This is why the best candidates for both liposuction and Kybella are those who have tight, firm skin and small amounts of fat deposits beneath their chin.
